Serving Up Serve

A few years ago, I got really into tennis. I still am, but I was then, too.

And because I apparently have to build something related to anything I’m interested in, I started an Apple Watch app for keeping score. If you’re not familiar with tennis, the scoring isn’t exactly linear or intuitive, but there is a logic to it. Turning that into an app was a fun challenge.

I built the watch app, then got distracted by some new thing, I’m sure. It never made it to the App Store. It only lived on my wrist.

Until now.

As you can probably tell from my recent blog posts, I’m spending a lot of time on my indie apps these days. I’d been working on some shared frameworks and tooling and needed yet another app to test them with. Why not dust off the simple tennis app that had been gathering cobwebs?

So I did. With the help of today’s modern technology, I jumped back in, polished it up, and expanded it to the iPhone. From there, it wasn’t a huge leap to jump on the pickleball trend and add support for pickleball scoring. And because I have some friends who are really into padel, I added that, too.

At this point, I realized I could let the scope creep for days. But I already had a nice, releasable app that would hopefully be useful to other people—something I could submit to the App Store and to RevenueCat’s Ship-a-ton event.

So, here I am introducing Serve.

Serve grew out of that simple watch app and now has a decent amount of functionality for tennis, pickleball, and padel on both iPhone and Apple Watch. Serve also includes widgets and Live Activities, making it even easier to see and record your score. It’s free to use, with additional customization and features available through a subscription.

If you’re into any of those sports, give it a try. You can learn more at servescoring.app or download Serve on the App Store today.
